Last week we talked about the importance of claiming your business page on Facebook. One of the decisions you make during this process is choosing a business category. While it might seem straightforward, choosing the wrong category can hurt your home improvement social media marketing performance. But don’t worry, we have you covered with some tips below.

Which Categories Definitely Aren’t Correct

For the most part, home improvement companies are not going to be choosing the following four categories:

  • Cause or Community. This is for nonprofits, people raising awareness for certain causes, and communities rallying around specific beliefs or causes.
  • This is for pages that provide entertainment as a service or product, such as bookstores, radio stations, or magazines.
  • Artist, Band, or Public Figure. These pages are run by or on behalf of people such as writers, musicians, athletes, or artists.
  • Brand or Product. You might think your business would fit here, and that’s true if it’s a home improvement brand that manufactures and sells specific products via retailers or service companies. For the most part, however, home improvement companies will not choose this option.

Choosing From the Remaining 2 Categories

That leaves “Local Business or Place” and “Company, Organization, or Institution.”

Either of these may be right for your home improvement Facebook page. To decide which one is best, ask yourself this question: Is your business primarily a brick-and-mortar location where people come to shop for items, or do you primarily provide services in people’s homes or businesses?

If it’s the first, choose Local Business or Place. This might be a good selection for a window décor company that has a showroom and handles most sales in that location, for example.

If it’s the latter or you aren’t sure, choose Company, Organization, or Institution. You are a company, so you can’t go wrong with this designation. You can still get options to allow people to check in to your location on Facebook, and you can choose a business subcategory that matches your services to help people find you on the platform.
