Whether you’re a pro at handstand pushups or you’ve never even seen a CrossFit gym in real life, some of the basic premises behind this popular exercise format can help you improve your home improvement marketing efforts.
In CrossFit, when someone reaches a personal record in lifting or another exercise, it’s called a PR—and it’s something to celebrate. In marketing, your PR might be a higher conversion rate, increased sales or more traffic. That’s worth celebrating too!
But to get to a PR, you must put in the work. Here are three CrossFit-inspired tips for leveling up your home improvement marketing efforts.
1. Pay Attention to Form
When you exercise, poor form leads to inefficiency and even potential injury. And that’s true in marketing, except the potential injury is to your bottom line or brand reputation, not your physical person.
Take these steps to work on your home improvement online marketing form:
- Pay attention to best practices, the competition, and online marketing experts. What can you learn from them that you can use in your own marketing?
- Keep an eye on your numbers to see what is performing well for you. Do more of that and less of other things.
- Constantly tweak your marketing to find the best way to connect with potential clients. There’s no such thing as perfect marketing form, especially since trends change constantly. You can always find something to improve.
2. Invest in the Right Content Marketing Fuel
CrossFit trainers typically counsel clients to get the right mix of nutrients for their bodies and goals. Without the right fuel, it’s much harder to complete, much less PR, a physical workout.
Roll with us on this metaphor: You have to fuel your marketing workout with the right nutrients too. Keyword research, an understanding of your target audience, writing and editing skills, strong value propositions—these are just some of the vitamins and minerals that help you PR your marketing efforts.
3. Understand How to Apply F.O.C.U.S.
F.O.C.U.S. is a common motivational acronym used in a variety of circles, including those related to fitness. It stands for Follow One Course Until Successful.
This one comes with a major caveat for online marketing, and we’ll change it to “Follow One Course Unless Successful.” Because some marketing strategies simply won’t work for your home improvement business, and sticking with them in the long term only wastes your time and money.
But it’s important to F.O.C.U.S. at least until you know for sure the tactic isn’t working. Remember that content marketing and SEO are long games; jumping from one strategy to another every week or two gets you nowhere.
